Paloma Picasso: Critical Analysis 1949-Present

Critical Analysis


           The main influence of Paloma Picasso was her father, Pablo Picasso. He is one of the most prominent, and acclaimed artists of the twentieth century. He is the creator of cubism, and has generated works that inspire, and will be apart of art history for the rest of time.  (“Pablo Picasso Biography”). Having a father with such power in the world of art, gave Paloma opportunity to grow around art, appreciate what it means, and how it can inspire those to look at it. Her father influenced her because she began her career as a painter, just as he did. The wisdom he gave her in the field helped Paloma grow as an artist, and create beautiful pieces. The zeitgeist of Paloma Picasso would be that of art. Beginning the late seventies, and flowing into the eighties, art was vast in the cultural world. Artists such as Jasper Johns, Willem De Kooning, and Keith Harring were a few popular artist of the time. (“American Cultural History”). The artist began pushing the envelope, creating designs that were out of the normal works viewers were accustomed to. The new exhibits caused negative reactions for many people, ending in large protests outside of museums. The work of Paloma reflects this spirit because during this time she also was stepping away from the typical jewelry designs, and generating new, aesthetically pleasing creations. With this spirit around her she was truly able to being innovating her creations, and lead into her own brand, developing perfumes and cosmetics. Paloma Picasso is an icon for reasons that are different then the typical iconic fashion designer. She stepped away from clothing design, and found her own passion in a different genre of creation. Her beautiful works for Tiffany & Co. are forever apart of the classic collection, and are iconic for the company. Finding the success from Tiffany’s gave her the ability to create her own brand, which became world known for the fashion accessories, perfume, and lipsticks.
