Paloma Picasso is a French artist and designer. She was born in Vallauris, France on April 19th, 1949. Her father is the world famous artist Pablo Picasso. (“Paloma Picasso Biography”). She was the youngest child in the family. She was married first to a man by the name of Rafael Lopez-Cambilhaving for a span of twenty-one years. They divorced, and she then became married to Eric Thevenet, a French doctor. (“Paloma Picasso Biography”). They are still espoused to this day. With Paloma having a father who was a famous artist, she was raised around art her entire life. She had an early understanding, and love for the subject. In Spanish her first name Paloma, translates to ‘dove.’ During the year of her birth her father had painted the famous dove symbol for the international peace conference in Paris. Having the image of the dove be so important, he decided to name his little girl after the symbol. . (“Paloma Picasso Biography”). In 1968 Paloma became a costume designer, having particular interest in jewelry design. She began selling her pieces at flea markets, which immediately grasped the attention of customers. Due to the love people had for her designs, Paloma enrolled into a jewelry course to be able to truly master her art. By the late 1960s Yves Saint Laurent had caught eye of her work and asked the young designer to help design jewelry for a collection he was creating. . (“Paloma Picasso Biography”).In 1971 she worked for Zolotas, a Greek jewelry company. Palomas big break came when she began working for Tiffany &Co. in 1981. Here, she produced her famous “signature Xs and scribbles in gold and sterling silver.” (“Paloma Picasso Biography”) She was very successful at Tiffany & Co., and was able to create her own label based on the success she found. She primarily designed perfumes, fashion accessories, and lipstick. (“Paloma Picasso Biography”). Her success in jewelry, along with her own label becoming internationally recognized, Paloma Picasso was able to place her name in fashion history.
