Alexander McQueen: Analysis of Future Trends 1960-2012

Analysis of Future Trends

The designs of Alexander McQueen will remain a huge impact on the fashion industry for present and future trends. McQueen is able to influence street styles from various runway collections. In a spring/summer show in Paris in 2001 McQueen showcased his “bumsters” trousers. (Knox 10). This style was a trouser pant that hung low on the women’s body. The look sparked the controversial craze of low-rise jeans in the everyday style of people in the streets. (Knox 10). Today low-rise jeans are seen everywhere. Fast fashion stores, and designer garments are always producing and selling low fitting jeans and pants. Stunning evening gowns that were often show stoppers at events are also a signifying look of a McQueen Piece. Thomas P. Campbell director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, is quoted saying, “…his most compelling designs are imbued with recurring narrative, aesthetic, and technical leitmotifs.” (Bolton 9). He is a lover of McQueen, and this quote exemplifies the fact that McQueen is an icon, and will be present in trends of the future. The theme of his works is always known, this is an element of design that will surely last into the future. One silhouette that marks McQueen and will last into the future would be that of a plunge-front sculpted neckline. Many garments have this design, giving it a sexy, womanlier appeal. Outrageous headgear, including antlers, umbrellas, feathers, and a melted hubcap is some of the outlandish headdress McQueen is known for. The look of skulls on pieces of various clothing and accessories is also another long lasting trend of McQueen. (Knox 12)  I personally do not own many items that resemble McQueen’s work. I absolutely adore what he has created though. He will forever be my favorite designer. His art is something that I can enjoy for the rest of my life; it is something I will show my children when they ask me what designer I most adore, and am most inspired by.
