Marc Jacobs: Analysis of Future Trends 1963-Present

Analysis of Future Trends

The impact of Marc Jacobs is seen in today’s trends, and will be vivid in fashion for years to come.  Brands such as Old Navy and Abercrombie & Fitch closely watch what Marc Jacobs produces so that they can quickly imitate his designs, knowing the looks will sell. His handbags and accessories are constantly being remade by low budget manufactures, gaining them money from the consumers who cannot afford an item that was produced by Marc Jacobs. Marc Jacobs has designed so many various pieces that they will all flow into the future of fashion with ease. One lasting silhouette would be the form-fitting look, showing off the curves of the body, and then in a very opposite manner, the loose look, giving the human body no shape. Some of the lasting trends of Marc Jacobs would include the layering of the grunge look, the waffle-weave fabric being introduced in cashmere, and the handbags he created at Louis Vuitton, as well as his own label. The most important trend though was that of taking a vintage piece, and turning it into something hip, modern, and bold. (Boone)

Cathy Horyn, a critic for the New York Times, gives an expert opinion on how Marc Jacobs is a huge influence on fashion:
“At some point in the next 20 to 30 years, an astute collector of Marc Jacob’s clothing will be sitting on a gold mine of information. Distance is required to appreciate the designs he has done for Louis Vuitton and his own label- the randomness, the appropriations, the superficial strafing of culture.” (Boone 77)
Marc Jacobs will go down in fashion history along side Chanel, Versace, Elsa Schiaparelli, and other famous designers that were able to create a huge impact in this industry.
Young designers everyday look to Marc Jacob for inspiration, and motivation to be successful. They are influenced by his design ethics, including the way he is able to stay away from the normal, and that the opinion of everyone else has no say in what a person can create. What the designer creates is their personal visions of a garment, if they love it, then they should not let anyone tell them differently. These beliefs Marc Jacobs has are a profound influence on the next generation of fashion designers.
